Reviewing Bowflex Dumbbells | SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells

image 78

Are you interested in the Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells? I wanted to do a Bowflex dumbbell review since I recently picked up a pair of weightlifting equipment thanks to a great deal on Amazon. I wanted to share my experience unboxing them and give you some insight into how these awesome weightlifting tools work. They even offer a 1-year JRNY membership to help you exercise to the next level.

We will look at how the unit gets delivered and what’s in the box, and then also at how the SelectTech 552 dumbbell set functions.

We’re gonna look at the Bowflex SelectTech construction and overall build. The compact design of this set of adjustable dumbbells makes it easy to store, and their 15 sets of weights allow for functional full body strength training.

If you’re curious about how this set of adjustable weights works, specifically the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells, then this article is for you.

First, let’s talk about how these Bowflex Selecttech 552 adjustable dumbbells were shipped and what was in the box.

As an Amazon affiliate, I might make commissions on purchases made via links on this page.

Unboxing The Bowflex SELECTTECH 552 Adjustable Dumbbells

bowflex selecttech 552 adjustable dumbbells

First, let me start by saying that this box was heavy. I know it’s got two SelectTech 552 weightlifting pieces in it, and the total weight was going to be over 100 pounds for the pair. But having said that, it was still a bit of a shock at how heavy it was the first time I lifted it and how difficult it was for me to get down the stairs in my house. I should’ve expected it, but it was still a surprise.

As I opened the box, my main concern was that a bunch of assembly was required to assemble the weightlifting equipment. To my shock and joy, the Bowflex SELECTTECH 552 Adjustable Dumbbells were assembled and tightly packed away in the Styrofoam inside the box. This was a huge relief and saved me a lot of time not having to interpret bad instructions and assembly.

Each adjustable dumbbell came on a plastic base, fitting nicely and securely with an additional strap to keep the weights attached. Since I had already purchased the rack storage trays for these SelectTech 552 dumbbells, I knew these plastic bases were supposed to attach to the storage rack, so I set these aside for now.

As expected, there was some additional paperwork and warranty information, but since these were already assembled, I was ready to attach them to the media stand and get going.

But I have to say; I was so happy that these came preassembled and how tightly packaged everything was. Both sets of dumbbells came out in perfect condition with zero issues, so we were off to a great start.

Now, let’s talk about how this set of dumbbells is built and how these weights work.

Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells

One of the market’s most popular sets of adjustable dumbbells, the SelectTech 552 Dumbbell Set is a mix of modern technology and good ole fashion Bowflex quality. The customer reviews for this product are overwhelmingly positive, and for good reason.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells Build

image 82

The general structure of the build of these SelectTech 552 dumbbells is exactly what you would expect out of both adjustable and standard dumbbells. The space saving compact design of this set of adjustable dumbbells allows them to be a valuable addition to any home gym, and you won’t have to worry about taking up too much space with them.

Each side of the Selecttech 552 dumbbell has an easy-to-use selection dial that allows you to set the desired weight for one side of the adjustable dumbbell, ensuring that both sides have the same weight to avoid lopsidedness.

The selection dial rotates smoothly and have a solid click, making the weight adjustment process effortless. With these SelectTech 552 dumbbells, you can adjust your free weights for various exercises and weight training at home or in the gym.

The Adjustable Weight System And How It Works

Now, let’s talk about how this set of SelectTech 552 dumbbells is built and how the weights work.

The Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbell Weight Plates

40c78ab0 b908 424f 9c59 b86807d4c46b

The 552 weight plates have an external plastic coating, with each plate slightly bigger or smaller than the previous one. This allows for many different variations of ways to be selected. And something worth noting here, since these are plastic exteriors.

There seems to be some confusion online about the inner weights, whether they are cast iron, steel, or metal plates. Either way, they are heavy.

If you have a hard floor, I can see where there is a possibility that dropping these SelectTech dumbbells down could crack the exterior of each weight plate if I were to drop them during weight lifting. I see that they sell these weights individually on the Bowflex website and Amazon websites, so there seems to be a need for replacement occasionally.

Note

The free weights go up in scale as follows: 5 7.5 10 12.5 15 17.5 20 22.5 25 30 35 40 45 50 and 52.5 lbs per adjustable dumbbell.

While the plastic on each dumbbell weight plate is a very hard texture, I think it could still lead to problems if not treated properly.

These weight plates are a crucial part of the adjustable weight system in the SelectTech 552 dumbbells. With the turn of a dial, the internal gears grip and release the 15 sets of weights on each end of the dumbbell. So depending on your weight selection, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbell gears determine which plates it needs to log onto to achieve the desired weight.

This means that when you lift the SelectTech 552 dumbbell after selecting your weight, some plates will likely be left behind, which is fine. Those weight plates do not need to be used for every exercise unless you go up to the maximum weight of 52.5 pounds; in that case, you will use all adjustable weight plates.

The Weight Selection Dial

Each side of the SelectTech dumbbell has an easy-to-use weight selection dial where you set the desired weight for one side of the dumbbell. This is a bit interesting because it requires a user to set both ends of the SelectTech 552 dumbbell with the exact same number of pounds, else you’ll have a lopsided dumbbell. But I will say that these selection dials rotate amazingly and have a nice solid click on these Bowflex adjustable dumbbells.

The Weight Increments

These SelectTech 552 dumbbells’ weight range is 5 to 52.5 lbs per Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbell. The weight increments on each SelectTech 552 dumbbell increase by 2.5 lb increments up until the 25-pound mark when you need to add weight.

Beyond the 25-pound mark, the small increments go up by 5 per side. This means that the 552 dumbbells can be adjusted in 2.5-pound increments up to the first 25 pounds and then five-pound increments beyond that. Strangely, there is an option for another 2.5 lbs for each SelectTech 552 dumbbell at that point. This equals a total max weight of 52.5 lbs on each dumbbell and lots of options in between.

pro tip

If you accidentally pick up the Selecttech 552 dumbbell with different weights on each end, be careful that it will be heavier on one side. Simply return the dumbbell to the base, and select the weight you want on the needed side.

Internal Gears and Weight Plates

With the turn of a dial, the internal gears grip and release the 15 sets of weights on each end of the dumbbell. So depending on your weight selection, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbell gears determine which plates it needs to log onto to achieve the desired weight.

This means that when you lift the SelectTech 552 dumbbell after selecting your weight, some plates will likely be left behind, which is fine. Those weight plates do not need to be used for every exercise unless you go up to the maximum weight of 52.5 pounds; in that case, you will use all adjustable weight plates.

The Handle On The SelectTech 552 Dumbbells

The other thing I was interested in was the handle on each one of these SelectTech 552 dumbbells.

Because I have slightly larger hands, I have had experiences with other models where my hands were either too bulky or barely big enough, and we’re just uncomfortable to use. I was glad to find out that there was plenty of room in these SelectTech 552 dumbbells for my large hands, but not so much that they would be sliding around whenever I was using them.

The handles’ material and some hard metal, with a slight knurl. The knurling is a great bonus to help keep these SelecTech 552 dumbbells from slipping.

Storage and Media Stand for the SelectTech 552 Dumbbells

d2571adb e185 4cf1 99f4 3301861c06b4

To store the SelectTech 552 dumbbells after your workout, slide them back into the rack in between the remaining adjustable plates. Be sure to take your time to avoid any issues. The turning knob and gear system work efficiently and make it easy to switch the weight from one exercise to another with minimal effort.

Additionally, Bowflex offers an optional media rack for the SelectTech 552 dumbbells. The compact media rack securely holds the dumbbells at an elevated level and provides a stand for your devices, making it easier to watch videos or follow exercise programs. While Bowflex offers a subscription-based home fitness JRNY app for the rack, the helpful value of the rack is just having the adjustable dumbbells elevated for easier reach and secure storage.

Working Out With The Bowflex 552 Dumbbells

While working with the Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbells, I learned a few things.

For example, the selection dials on these Selecttech 552 dumbbells are very user friendly. It only took me a few minutes to determine how weights adjust on each single dumbbell. I quickly adjusted the weight selection on each dumbbell and moved on to the next exercise.

I found myself using them increasingly as I became more familiar with the adjustable weight settings.

Note

If you need a little more weight, consider the SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells, which go up to 90 lbs each! Click HERE to check them on Amazon.

Another thing that I was careful about was how I dropped the Selecttech 552 dumbbells onto the floor.

With my concrete floor, I wanted to have some mat or soft surface for my dumbbells to land. So I put a few home gym pads around the workout areas that I was in during my full body workout. This helped ensure that I didn’t accidentally damage the free weights or the Selecttech 552 dumbbells.

And these aren’t just for arm workouts; you can do all sorts of full and lower body exercises weight exercises as well, like the bench press, goblet squats, lunges, dumbbell deadlifts, and more.

Overall, I found the SelectTech 552 dumbbells to be a great addition to my home gym. They are versatile, easy to use, and have a wide range of weight settings. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a high-quality set of free weights.

Final Thoughts On The SelectTech 552 Dumbbells

With so many options on the market, consumers have a lot to choose from. But because I’m a big fan of Bowflex home fitness equipment, this is the brand that I chose, especially because of the high popularity of the Bowflex Selecttech 552 and its 5-star rating.

Right out of the box, I was impressed with the Bowflex 552 adjustable dumbbell build, quality, and overall feel of these SelectTech 552 dumbbells, featuring heavy construction and compact design. I was also very impressed by the actual process of changing the weight and how it is truly adjustable with its weight selection dial.

I loved being able to start using this pair of 52.5 lb dumbbells out of the box within 10 minutes, effectively replacing 15 sets of dumbbells. It was a big burden off my shoulders not to have to mess around with any assembly. But my biggest test is always the workout, which passed with flying colors.

Thanks to the quick change weight system of these SelectTech 552 dumbbells, I could do many certain exercises quickly with this set of dumbbells. And you can work any body part with these SELECTTECH 552 Dumbbells; legs, back, chest, abs, shoulders, and arms, offering full body strength.

There is a slight learning curve your first couple of times using these Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells to get used to changing each side of the Bowflex dumbbell weight and inserting the SelectTech 552 dumbbells back into the base. But you can go from adjusting from 5 pounds up to 50 pounds once you’ve figured out these great weights.

Bowflex might be best known for their every day home gyms, but these SelectTech 552 dumbbells are a game-changer and a clear leader compared to other adjustable dumbbells with their ease of use and product info.

They might be the best adjustable dumbbells I’ve tried yet.

My only regret? Only that I didn’t get these Bowflex dumbbells sooner, as I discovered them just a few years ago.
